Demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement.
There are many communication strategies that can be used manage a classroom and support student engagement. Some that I have used are:
- Standing silently at the front of the class while waiting for students to quiet down is an effective strategy to calm the class down without yelling.
- Teachers use different strategies to gain students' attention, such as a clap pattern, phrase, word or ringing a bell. This indicates to students that their attention is required.
- Writing a list of tasks to complete or a learning intention on the board can help engage the student's in their learning as they have something to reference back to if needed instead of interrupting the learning of those around them if they have questions.
- Using body and hand movements to engage student's in lesson (particularly useful for songs and reading books) Shown below is myself using hand movements to demonstrate different body parts of animals during an English lesson in Hong Kong where the target language was animal body parts. It helped to cement the learning for the students.
