Identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement in classroom activities.
Feeling safe to express one selfs individuality in a classroom, community or workplace is important. In any room of people there is always differences of ideas, race, culture and religion amongst other things. Holley and Steiner(2005) describe a safe classroom space to be ‘one in which students are able to openly express their individuality, even if it differs dramatically from the norms set by the instructor, the profession, or other students.’ Being in a safe space that is free from physical, emotional and psychological harm whether in the workplace, classroom or community is important for anyone to feel free to engage and express themselves.
Students can feel supported and included in classroom activities if they feel safe and important within the classroom. This can be encouraged by the teacher getting to know the students and their triggers, limits and strengths. Students need to know they're an important part of the school community, and that they are heard and safe.
